My Friend Ebony
by
Josette Marie Louise Lager
In the heat of the night I hear
a whippoowill moaning soft and
low, there's a sweet sort of sadness
about it,it seems to be coming from
the bottoms,a humid muggy mesquito
infested swamp.Alot of poor folk
live down there,life is tough,hard
for them,the welfare department steps
in to help,whenever they can.
Ebony,she's a friend of mine,tall lanky
and boney,a stiking figure of a woman
she is,keeps me laughing and entertained
for hours, giving me plastic flowers instead
of real ones.I love her gator stories, their
rip roaring and wild, she told me once how she
wrestled one to the ground, until he said uncle,
then she cooked him up,and had enough left over
to make a pair of real alligator shoes, and a purse
to match.
Ebony always gives me a nice hot lunch when I come
to visit,usually it's corn bread and butter,karo
syrup, baked beans, and her own secret recipe for
home made barbecue sauce.
She wears a plain calico dress, and puts her hair
up in a bun, sweat rolls down her face, its so muggy
so hot, down hear in the bottoms.I'm gonna buy her
a present,a beautifull hawaiian dress with bright
colors,I'll make sure there's lots of plumeria
flowers on it.
There's a sweet sort of sadness about Ebony
she lost her only child,a stillborn, she named
him Jackson, rumour has it,that she buied him
in the woods, because she couldn't bury him
proper, that's just not true, she would never
do that, the welfare department would have to
step in,besides Ebony,is a proper christian
woman,and she's my friend,the end.
