Trains
by
John William McGrath III
As a child I loved to watch a train
Back then it was chug, chug, with smoke
Such a sight to see one in the rain
To watch the tender shovel and stoke
The engineer blew the whistle for the kids
Always waved and smiled, it was great
He pulled the cord that opened the lids
Let the steam escape 'til the sound abate
On the wooden trestle above the tracks
There we stood, our bunch of little boys
Standing in the smoke from the cracks
Every boy had his little train set toys
We would go to the train depot, our game
Excited until they warned us of the dangers
There we would ask the engineer his name
Playing games of trains and Texas Rangers
To know an engineer's name was a joy
Actually... it was a feather in our cap
It was the dream of every little boy
To have the name of all the trains on tap
To know both the engineer and stoker
You were a celebrity among the guys
Then you became the local name broker
for you knew all the wheres and whys
To this day I love to see a train go by
It reminds me of those bygone days
Of children's innocence, & wonder why
Thinking of those little faces, I can cry
