The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - Pope Joan

Pope Joan

by

James Bredin

Was Pope John the eight really a girl called Joan?
Did I just hear the readers of Da Vinci Code moan?
Is this a mythical thing or is it true as I read and heard?
Between Pope Leo the fourth and Pope Benedict the third.

No doubt there are strong feelings here but I donít know why,
If a woman was Pope John or Joan and gave birth to a child,
Did they kill her on a Roman Street despite her gender?
Written out of history except for Tarot card splendor.

How much of this is legend, myth, fancy fable or fact?
Did they expunge some documents and overreact?
Would they do that in those dark medieval times?
Is that the mosque or a cathedral bell I hear chime?
