The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - Francophonie French

Francophonie French

by

James Bredin

I want to learn French ‘cause I hear it so much on TV,
If I was a refugee claimant it would be free,
They get lessons in French that I am not allowed,
And the bilinguals in Ottawa all feel so proud,

I’m poor and it would cost an arm and a leg,
Therefore for French classes I would have to beg,
Because in this multicultural bilingual land,
I have one language and culture that I understand,

Bilingual Ottawa types want to keep it this way,
Happy that I understand only half of what they say,
A second-class citizen in this Canadian race,
A dense unilingual English-speaking disgrace.
