The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - Political Wishbook
All votes in parliament should be free and now,
Minority government should at least allow,
We should have recall and referendums too,
I might even vote Liberal if this came true.
About these appointed judges, I have suggestions,
Appointments should hinge on how they answer questions,
By a special committee open to the public,
Like they do down south of us in the big republic.
Could proportional representation be the rule,
‘Cause first past the post can be misleading and cruel,
Should senators be elected or appointed for life
Should these ideas be forbidden in case of strife?
Should immigration be a provincial matter?
Questions obviously mad as a hatter,
‘Cause the status quo can’t change just like their Charter,
Never used "notwithstanding" clause but did it matter?
And no property rights, if you wanted to know,
As in the Soviet Union and our status quo,
And bilingualism is the rule if they can,
In places that never heard French since time began,
Should Canadians be required to vote?
Or isolated like some wild mountain goat,
Because party discipline is the way to go,
Candidates disappear and go with the flow.
