The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - One-Party State
Why do Canadians live in a one-party state?
Caused by Mulroney’s GST -- stacked Senate, no debate?
Was it arrogance or power or traveling around?
Or lack of accountability that put them to ground?
Did this give the Liberals no opposition?
To tax and spend and continue the tradition?
Where Chretien appointed friends to top positions,
The Senate, the court, to implement his ambitions.
Without checks and balances they went completely wild,
Conspiracies that would make the Mafia look mild,
Giving millions to Liberal friends down in Quebec,
A Shawinigan shyster that signed all the checks.
‘Cause Quebec might have another referendum,
Didn’t sign his Charter or obey his memorandums,
That only he is allowed to make decisions,
No recall, impeachment or provincial divisions.
‘Cause in a one-party state it’s the status quo,
Decisions are made by the man with all the dough,
Where Challenger jets can be bought on the sly,
Where nobody but nobody can ever ask why.
