The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - Near-Royalty Nerds
Apparently their Excellencies have done great work,
Judging by him or her or some journalist dork,
Eating at the tough and spending lavish amounts,
Because thatís all we know and thatís all that counts.
Weíre allowed to observe how they spend and spend,
At Rideau Hall or Russia where they prance and pretend,
That they are Lord and Lady of all they survey,
And allowed to put on an extravagant display.
Arrogantly announce, she spends the money well,
With sixty friends in Finland and nothing to sell,
Or was it Greenland with those relatives and friends?
Impressing the natives with her spendthrift trends.
Are perks of pompous appointees just an illusion?
Did Marie Antoinette have the right solution?
When she screamed at the mob to go and eat cake,
Lost her cool and her head so couldnít stay awake.
Should Canadians someday maybe bring about change?
To this ancient feudal appointment and rearrange,
And confess to the facts that maybe we should fix
Bring it all up to date, these illusions and tricks.
