The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - Deteriorating Development
Lax laws with flaws with early release conditions,
Lenient judges and self righteous politicians,
Someone in Toronto gets shot every weekend night,
While screaming about this and that Charter Right.
Boards and bureaucracies bending backwards for bums,
Many of whom should be bound in asylums,
Long ago the backbone of the people disappeared,
Replaced by special-interest types who seem quite weird.
Homeless in sleeping mounds make silent demands,
While politicians run around wringing their hands,
Step over bodies to get into City Hall,
Too busy to look and not subject to recall.
They wonder whatís wrong as the city goes to hell,
Canít do anything or the pussy-footers will yell,
Theyíll have a conference with everyone in sight,
Pompously proclaim that everythingís alright.
Special laws written just for young offenders,
Criminals who canít be named or even their genders,
Terrorists allowed into the country every night,
Maybe Osama claiming his every Charter right.
Can we go back to when citizens owned the streets?
Before panhandling and sleeping bags was thought elite,
When criminals quickly ended up in jail,
And policemen walked tall and proud -- not like a snail.
