The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - Canadian Bilingualism
Locked in your thoughts, comfortable and composed,
No referendums or recall when it was imposed,
Bilingualism that turned you into second class,
Just a unilingual type -- not elite or entitled to pass.
Relegated to be obedient observer,
Because of their dictatorial fervor,
In your country and language that you canít change,
Because Ottawa has decreed that this is not strange.
So you second class citizen, how does it feel?
All that freedom to change things - quite surreal,
Democracy for five minutes every five years,
And youíve been banned from those civil service careers.
Allowed to vote only when and if they decide,
Maybe now, maybe next year, when and if they provide,
No proportional representation allowed,
Not by this sleazy status quo Liberal crowd.
Because bilinguals get special attention you see,
So much for equality even with your degree,
Canít impeach, elect or recall a prime minister,
Theyíre bilingual elites born to administer.
