The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - Rasputin and the Governor General
Rasputin and the Governor General
Time warp to the decade of decadent Russian royalty now,
Rasputin would really recognize pretend-royalty somehow,
The GG’s crowd from Canada in his Siberian town,
The czar and the czarina moving along and looking down.
The years, the wars, the communists and the gulags have all gone,
Replaced by swinging Canadians with Adrienne and John,
Some sixty pompous persons on parade - all prominent pals,
Billion-dollar boondoggle bearing gifts with maple-leaf decals.
This gaggle of freeloaders found their way to the gravy train,
And no one protested, or found the time to carp or complain,
Just like ancient Russia where docile -- hats off and bowed their heads,
Rasputin would understand, long before the Whites and the Reds.
