The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - Toronto-Ottawa Connection

Toronto-Ottawa Connection

by

James Bredin

Half the people in Toronto are working all day and night
The other half are still stuck in traffic pondering their plight
As gridlock grinds us to a halt and we wonder what to do
With garbage piled high on trucks to Michigan barley getting through

And we pay our taxes to Ottawa and they have our money
And they’re keeping it to look after it, which might seem quite funny
Or they’ll reroute it to Rwanda ‘cause they need it much more
We sometimes ask but they always laugh and then slam the door

Or worse - they say they’ll form a committee to study our plight
Manned by politicians they pompously selected late one night
And they’ve scheduled another meeting sometime late in the fall
They may think of Toronto’s problem and maybe not at all

And those with SARS shall be all right because that’s what they said
And celebrated that event forgetting as Toronto bled
And that was before SARS two but then they had a convention
A leadership thing much more deserving of their attention
