The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - The New Canadian Identification Card

The New Canadian Identification Card

by

James Bredin

Will you wring your hands later when someone demands your ID?
Have you registered your gun, paid your taxes, now letís see,
I looked in your eyes; have they changed color recently?
And whoís that woman by your side and does she have ID?

What do you mean, she doesnít have ID and sheís not your wife?
Both of you better now come with me if you value your life,
The law passed like Kyoto, same-sex marriage and metric stuff,
This demands a strip search here Ďcause your explanationís not enough.

You had no input into that law according to your tale,
Phone your MP and see if she will arrange to make your bail,
And the printout when I scanned your card said you didnít even vote,
Youíre going to the Gulag in the Artic and thatís remote.
