The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - Sending Peacekeepers to be policemen

Sending Peacekeepers to be policemen

James Bredin

They send soldiers to be policemen half a world away,
Not bothering to ask Canadians what they have to say,
‘Cause Canadians have no recall of politicians,
Can’t even vote for their prime minister in these conditions.

They’re worried about human rights on the far side of the world,
Liberals want to interfere there with their UN flags unfurled,
But what they really want is power, soft power you see,
Appointments to the upper echelon of the UN hierarchy.

The vanity of politicians who want to police the planet,
And depose dictators ‘cause their faith in the UN is granite,
Unfortunately they never never look in the mirror,
They’re stuck with the dictatorial status quo much nearer.
