The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - He Who Pays the Piper Calls the Tune

He Who Pays the Piper Calls the Tune

by

James Bredin

The legacy of the dipstick spells disgust and disaster,
At taxing and spending his Liberals were always past masters,
And Canadians still have their heads stuck deep in the sand,
Keep electing these idiots who never take or make a stand.

They’ll sit on the fence till the United Nations decides,
Pompous and pleased at what they like to think, the UN provides,
Like cowards, they just don’t want to be involved in any fights,
And at a UN conference, they strut their stuff with bragging rights.

And the demonstrations get denser up and down the street,
Shouting their slogans, holding their placards high and indiscreet,
And their surveys show them numbers that they’re on the right track,
They’re not worked up about Bin Laden or his terrorist attack.

How come these brave Canadians are so complacent?
Is it because Bin Laden or Saddam are nowhere adjacent?
Is it because they think democracy is a vote every five years?
For someone who immediately and quickly disappears.

I’m sorry to have to tell you, the UN is on its last legs,
Benevolent but brutal and benign when for backing it begs,
The writing has been on the wall and it’s way past high noon,
That the US pays this piper and they get to pick the tune.
