The Web Poetry Corner - James Bredin - Euthanasia

Euthanasia

by

James Bredin

We should have a place where people can go to die,
Those in pain, too old, sick and tired of being alive,
A place where people could demand a good exit,
Above board, legally accepted so clinics could fix it.

I know the ethics of this idea are irregular and strange,
Though accepted in the Netherlands and easy to arrange,
But here the government is a distant thousand miles away,
So pompous pious politicians can stay aloof and astray.

Officious priests and pushy prudes all know the score,
Change nothing to help those struggling out the door,
Canít have euthanasia Ďcause itís against their rules,
Everyone has rights except those sick and tired old fools.

Terrorist illegal refugees have rights in our Charter,
But dying seniors donít -- lying in pain being martyrs,
No sanctimonious lying lobbyists for those checking out,
No politically correct pundits to help those without clout.

Mercy killing is against our religious righteous laws,
No binding referendums that could point out these flaws,
Could oblige them to change things from the way they are,
From traveling the world sending back sound bites from afar.

Those who want to die quickly to avoid their constant pain,
Should be allowed to persevere and have no one complain,
Arrange everything say goodbye and let them cry,
Have a party, sing a song, buck the trends and die.
