Their Secret
by
J. M. Hallett
There was a secret she could not tell
Not to her mother, her friends...
Not to anyone
She scribbled it with her fat, eraserless pencil
On a pulpy page in her Big Chief tablet once
That was shortly after it happened
But that was years ago
When she was just a child
She ripped it out immediately, though, sobbing
And threw it into the fireplace
Today
She went to visit her priest on his deathbed
And she was finally able to rid herself
Of her emotionally crippling
Near-paralyzing burden
She did so by whispering to him
That he must carry her secret with him
So that it too
Could be consumed by the flames of hell
