On the Border Between Life and Death
by

Life hides
When death knocks
A coyote howls
A rabbit stops
Perks her ears
Then on she hops
To a secluded spot
‘Til darkness falls
To await the piercing
Horned Owl claws
In the fading light
An immigrant hides
From the vigilante
Minuteman’s eyes
With his string of scalps
His xenophobic pride
And his 44
Strapped to his side
Still, only The Reaper
Knows who will ride
With him this night
And who will slide
Survival’s the quest
Down on the border
Between life and death
