The Web Poetry Corner - Hay Machine - Proposed Commonwealth

Proposed Commonwealth

by

Hay Machine

Perish the thought
why don't they join ours
but realistically
it shouldn't have that jingoistic ring
more appropriate
a right instead of might association-thing

There's no point trying to compete
with Microsoft the internet
and the U.S. military machine
but the intellectual content
the spirit and the moral piece
the music party conversation
humour wit and thoughtfulness
even the politic the literary dramatic and show-business bit
might just as well
and maybe better even sometimes be
an Irish or a Kazak common wealth outfit

It doesn't have to physically reside
except where people gather in its name
no flag nor emblem designates its cause
no lawyer bishop king nor academic
chairs its way or waits for its applause
it only has one rule of membership admission
no force allowed but no one needs permission

But then again
reflect on ordinary life
no point to reinvent the schpiel
when what we need is no more bloody strife
this commonwealth exists
within the lives of nearly every living soul
each moment filled to overflowing with potential glee
and everything that glows or grows a grip
for everone who holds that key
