The Web Poetry Corner - Hay Machine - Portrait of a Nocturne

Portrait of a Nocturne

by

Hay Machine

(No.2 in E flat major, Op. 9 No. 2)

His palette some pale hand
to mix these drips of life upon
dreaming
of George Sand
stroke of brush his own caress
dipping into hollows
touching
the contours of her dress

Juice of Autumn peach
chilled in evening air
its own gentle urgency
knowing but not kneeling to despair

When words have failed to paint this scene
it's time to close a listening eye
to drink from out this spring
and sleep cradled in his dream
