Once in a hundred years or so it seems
a genius comes along
and plaits the lifelines of a nation
very often short-lived lives
full of ordinary moments and reserve
and in their times
more often than they do
they do not get the hearing they deserve
Lately we are learning more to know you
your stature did rise up and is the monument
that marks the land you loved (and may yet know you)
portrayed forever looking sideways and thinking ahead
reconciled your hallmark was your decency
spring-fed God-given soldier
surrounded by your own it's said
and each one vested in the end
Once in a thousand years or so it seems
your genius came along
identified the vein and kicked it hard
your short-lived life
full of ordinary moments and reserve
although in your time finally outflanked
fitting that your plinth is shared alone with Arthur Griffith
the worthy one who did not undermine you
