The Web Poetry Corner - Hay Machine - Manor Street
Manor Street
by
Hay Machine
I preferred to descend from Prussia Street
slipping down
past Gavin Lowe livestock agents
where dealers
with green tweed suits and oxblood shoes
overdressed in cromby coats
and turf-brown hats
did the rounds on Wednesdays
lodging the night before
at the City Arms Hotel
their marketplace
the wide silver acres of Cattle pens behind
cattle drivers
slipping down
down to the triangle
to Kavanaghs
russ in urbe
Murrays groceries two-store stand
van-delivering foodstuffs
to a promising land
across Stanhope Street's dark pearly Gates
where plain Pearl Kerrigan on Tuesday waits
her father cycling from Grangegorman down
down to Desmonds
(sensible shoes for a sensible girl)
galoshes for Gabriel
sandles for Pearl
Down to the river
Paul and Vincent for seed
conservative men of the protestant creed
Judd Brothers skin merchants vendors of hide
what on earth is fraternity doing inside
don't even breathe
until sweet Smithfield air
nearby Brunswick Street Hardwicke
and the Richmond for care
Down-past debtor's prison
where lawyers conspire
after-dark in Benburb street
for red-light desire
awnings in canvas
cobbles and dung
song of the fifties
for Manor Street sung
