The Web Poetry Corner - Hay Machine - Irish Open

Irish Open

by

Hay Machine

Proper landscape long before with hedge and chestnut bank
now shaven-shaped and prim-trimmed like a poodle
men in yellow v-neck tops and wives with tartan trousers
wrecking natural lie of land the smug and shallow lousers

That there's pleasure in a well-struck ball no question
but clubhouse blazer'd fairway bore spreads deadly indigestion
and will they hide their painful empty lives these men ?
not enough the Druids turning over in their ancient Glen

Second-hand lino dealers and assistant bank managers
with golf glove fingers dangling (from arse pocket) nonchalantly
Andy Williams fantasy played out in v-neck detail
fourball lads buy wholesale whilst non-members must pay retail

Far better if the land was let grow wild
than tame and iron it with this grim suburban tide
back-tee and greenside bunker with long-handled rake
in landscape terms an insult and a middle-class mistake
beware the eighth with left-hand dogleg one and all
from out-of-bounds those urchin kids with sense of right
will steal your well-placed ball
