The Web Poetry Corner - Hay Machine - Digital Empire

Digital Empire

by

Hay Machine

Our thoughts confined to narrow bands
Victoria Regina
her empire gone from peak to ruin
but Uncle Sam is meaner

Egyptian Greek and Roman worlds
lie jilted in the desert
Britannia ruled but rules no more
by any standard measured

What brings these empires to an end
foundations deep and splendid
the boldness of their venturers
so hard to comprehend it

The current order leaves the World
to think it independent
whereas it functions only if
George Washington defends it

They never landed on our shores
nor sounded an invasion
but waved electrons through our space
in gradual persuasion

Michael Jackson stole our young
and William Gates the elders
rock and roll and chewing gum
their grinders and their welders

America our motherland
where hyphens join the races
except the black and Spanish hoards
with whom we won't swop places

I saw one day a sign display
a crooked Hollywood
and hovered there in hovercraft
a joke it looked but no one laughed

What empire next that Stalin's dead
and Mao Tse Tung a moron
each one of us an emperor
ourselves to pour the scorn on
