Another Visit to 5 Cromwell Place

Hay Machine
(the Artist's Studio)
It still feels good the very thought of it
the journey and arrival all have heat in them
then the pillared portico appears
and Hazel's door and threshold
where so many down the years
simply did not want to stop themselves
and the moment before fulfilment
the earthly sound of swinging oak
the flagstoned hall
the ante room
the winding stair
If stone on stone can hold a spirit soul
as graveyard seems to keep the lifeless bone
the passions and the art in Cromwell Place
present themselves so that you never feel alone
light of heavens from the garden and the street
before the war the roof was one glass sheet
the studio the whole top floor
spirit-filled with sitters and the artist draped
palette grasped and canvas stretched
the rounded mantle
the plaster high
the winding stair
It feels good the very thought of it
the history and the art still warming
I do not care to leave this moving place
but there are other things to do
and other art to face
the bookend form
the sweetest street
the winding stair
