No matter what way the wind is
the outside world blows in from the east
only as far as Charlestown
and on the raised bogs
between there and Kiltamagh
the care and skill of one man
is written in steel and concrete
and in letters a mile long
So soft spoken but not like Donegal
gentle
with the tension of an uncoiled spring
and everywhere
whispered words of breaking news
has his back to the sea
has the unfortunate Seamus Hughes
Cooper-Flynn might win
but the boys are out at night
with black markers bought in Manchester
knocking out her two front teeth
on those expensive plastic posters
her fah-ther bought her
and Himself
walking even taller
PJ has his work cut out
and Michael Ring should be all right
but you see
Moffett has a circle to drive around at night
whereas poor Seamus Hughes has his back to the sea
do you see?
And I'll tell you
it's not looking good for Higgins
because Kenny is well-liked and his fah-ther of course
(held in such esteem)
as Enda shadow-boxes old friends in the street
and slaps backs at Knock Airport
not a teacher now a Statesman
careful fellow
takes a pint
and believes that language is the essential difference
he'll be all right
and that's that
