The Web Poetry Corner - Hardy Parkerson - I Served My Time

I Served My Time

by

Hardy Parkerson

I served my time, I wore the green:
The olive-drab of Uncle Sam;
I heard the frenzied sergeant scream,
"You're goin', boy, to Viet Nam!"

I served my time, I paid my dues;
I crawled through muck and mire and snow;
And to the sergeant broke the news:
To Viet Nam I would not go.

I fooled him, yes I did, all right;
While others drew geen underwear,
I packed my bag and in the night
Did to my home repair.

For I had joined the National Guard,
And at home I sat out the war;
Serving my country in my own ward,
I asked, "What are they fighting for?"

Good men returned to my hometown,
No heroes they, nor I;
But O that I had gone with them,
'Though even there I'd died!

My buddy died in Viet Nam,
I passed the war at home;
And such a sense of guilt has come,
I might as well have gone.
