The Web Poetry Corner - Francis Duggan - The odd one out

The odd one out

by

Francis Duggan

She is an ornithologist 'a what somebody said'
And others went on talking whilst others shook their head
Then some one said I get your 'drift' I now know what you
mean
She goes out with binoculars to watch birds from a screen.

The main topic was Aussie rules and each one had their say
Of who might win the premiership on football's biggest day
The 'tigers' or the 'bombers' the'cats' or 'kangaroos
The 'bulldogs' or the 'eagles' and what about the 'blues'.

And what team in september would prove themselves the best?
And she listened through all of this and tried to feign
interest
But she wished they'd change the subject to any thing at all
As she had, had an ear full of talk about football.

Her sister's engagement party she would not spoil the night
She had to seem interested she had to act polite
She was a nature lover no nature lover here
But talk of football heroes through spells of guzzling beer.

T'was not her sort of party she felt the odd one out
And this final in september what was the fuss about?
She tried to seem interested at times 'we must pretend'
But silently she wished for now this football talk would end

Of who would win the premiership she did not even care
But of her hidden feelings the guests were not aware
She is an ornithologist 'a what somebody said'?
And others went on drinking whilst others shook their head.
