The Web Poetry Corner - Francis Duggan - Aussie Joe

Aussie Joe

by

Francis Duggan

He was born and raised in eastern block Hungary
In which town offhand I can't say that I know
And then he became a citizen of Britain
But nowadays he is known as 'aussie joe'.

He took on the world's best boxer's in his prime day
And the very finest he put to the test
He lost on points to Ali and to Frazier
Two decades back when they were at their best.

He is now the champion boxer of Australia
Australian heavyweight boxing at an all time low
Ruled by a man quite close to if not fifty
Who should have retired twenty years ago.

At forty seven George Foreman was world champion
To become one of boxing's greatest comeback men
But Joe Bugner was never good as foreman
The fights that mattered most he did not win.

The heavyweight boxing champion of Australia
He's fifty years and getting old and slow
Hungarian before he became British
And now the Aussies call him 'aussie joe'.
