The Unforgotten
by

The sky was blue once
Over the fair city
Where the symbols of commerce stood.
Tall towers of gold that aspired sunwards.
Then a low rumble in the distance
And the buildings trembled
As the lightning struck.
In the moments that followed
The earth seemed to pause
As an explosion in time
Created a hole
Thru which eternity came rushing in.
At that instant
Heros were born
Who braved the fires of hell's worst nightmare
To give freedom a second chance.
There in the darkness of fear
Hands clasped hands
And skin color faded
As brother led brother
Sister led sister
And friend led friend to safety.
But then those brave ones who defied death
To protect America's citizens
Gave their fullest measure
And sacificed their lives
As the would-be rescuers
Were buried beneath tons of smouldering rubble.
But their faith was undimmed.
The light within each of them grew bright
As the flames carried their spirits upwards
Placing each of them in the heavens
As a new star.
And for each returning soul
God shed a tear
And wrote their names in the clouds.
Those of the guilty written in the dust.
On that day the symbol of our nation
A bald Eagle
Circled over the ruins
And left there a single rose
With red, white and blue petals
For us to remember them by
