The Web Poetry Corner - Dwayne Pagnotto - The Reward
The Reward
by
Dwayne Pagnotto
A chance meeting in the city
On a busy New York street.
She pauses there on the corner.
Removing her compact
She fixes her make-up
Approaching perfection in the mirror.
As she steps down off the sidewalk
The traffic hesitates and lets her cross
Before the light ever changes.
Then amidst the beautiful confusion
Of horns, lights and voices
She lets go her purse
Hanging ever so loosely from her fingers.
Feeling heroic
I step behind her
And catch it by the strap.
She smiles and holds out her hand.
As i return it, our eyes meet
And exchange promises.
She opens her mouth to speak
But all i hear is the roar of the city.
Then all the movement around us seems to stop
For that one brief moment
As she takes the purse from my hand.
Centuries pass
As we replay every single love story ever written.
In them all
She is the sleeping princess
Whom my kiss awakens.
And as our lips meet
She disappears
Leaving in my hand
A single red rose
Thornless.
