The Need Never Satisfied

I can't hear them anymore
The voices are hoarse from calling.
On the chalkboard childlike scrawlings
Unfolding our doom in simple ways.
The apple busted open reveals a five-pointed star within.
See it?
Go on....pick it up
Smell it
Bite it
Then listen...
This sound comes with a flavor.
Ah, the sweet taste of self-destruction.
The flame that burns the loudest.
So loud you don't even hear it
Till after your deaf.
How we love to bask in it's invitingly decadant glare.
We run our fingers thru it
And nothing happens.
We hold our hand over it
And still nothing.
Just a mild numbing sensation
That overspreads your brain in waves of unmeasured excess.
But there be many fires
By which we warm ourselves.
There is the bright flame of forbidden desire
Which glows a deep rich purple
And burns off the threads of worldly attatchments.
Then there is the vibrant amber glow of the leaves
As they begin to change color
When the cancerous decay of autumn sets in.
And again the crackling orange flames of the campfire
Where we all sit around
And tell scary stories.
Behold how the sparks fly upwards
Ocaasionally landing on someone.
They're drawn to us.
Like fireflies they're fun
But they won't hurt you.
Sometimes I just wanna dive into this self-consuming flame
I see raging before me
And end it all.
But no, I would never do that
That's the easy way out.
And besides
I prefer the slow burn I get
When I light another ciggarette.
