The Kingdoms of Life
by
Dwayne Pagnotto
Half asleep i wander thru the dreary planes of existence
As great cosmic dustclouds of history go rolling slowly by me.
They leave a gritty taste in my mouth
And a grainy feeling in my eyes.
Seems like i've been here before.
As i fade in and out of reality
I see mixed images of forgotten lives
Can't quite remember...
Was that me who with grim determination
Stormed the mighty walls of Troy?
Was it i who sat at the right hand of King Arthur
While he held council at the table round?
It's coming back to me now...
I seem to recall kneeling at the side of a raven-haired maiden
Wooing her with soft-spoken words of love
As a group of court musicians
Played a sweet serenade in the backround.
I remember creating great masterpieces of art
For the wealthy patrons of Florence.
Then, from that point on i draw a blank
As a gray velvet haze
Settles over my mind.
What happened between then and now
I'm not sure.
Blinded by these whirling windstorms of time
I can no longer see clearly....
As i take a wrong turn, and end up lost
In a long passageway full of doors.
All of them look the same
But every door leads to somewhere different.
As i search and search
Peering into each of them
Trying to find the one i came thru
The one that brought me here
To where i am now
So that i can mark it down
And remember
Lest i venture thru it again
On my next lifetrip.
