The Forgotten Ones

Punished for nothing
We keep them locked away in the world's basement.
They did no crime
And yet they're being made to suffer.
Trapped in a festering sewerhole of poverty and ignorance
Their little bellies are bloated, overstuffed with hunger.
Their eyes are big and beautiful
And so unspeakably sad, they could make corpses weep.
We look into their faces and see only one question there
Why?
With no one to hear their cries
Except God and the gutterflies.
Trampled flowers they are, whose fragrance is all used up.
They blossom forth in despair from the polluted earth around them.
Tender sproutlings that wither away uncared for.
What will you bring them this year, oh ye kings of the earth?
A glass of cold water?
A piece of fresh bread maybe?
Or just a kind glance full of pity?
Whatever care package you happen to send
Please place within it the seeds of hope
For a brighter tomorrow.
