Still Life
by
Dwayne Pagnotto
Shattered glass.
Sudden realization overcomes me
As I look at myself
In a cracked molten surface
Of undiffused light
And see the fragments of an image
Detatched from itself.
Now, sear the painful expression there
Into my mind
So I don't forget
All the tomorrows
Which yesterday never saw
Still waiting on them
Living my life in reverse.
Then widen the gap as I grow older
Looking back the year in pictures
Each one a precise negative
That never developed
Placed carefully
In the plastic overlay photo album of memories
The ones where i did'nt smile
Always out of focus
My whole existence
Up till now
Seems like a single snapshot blur
Cut into frames
No happy recollections here
Just a hazy kind of confused feeling
Of....where did it all go?
As the watery lakeside reflection
Of insubstantial dreams
Is suddenly disturbed
By the rock of reality
Smooth hard and cold
Dropped in and sunk me to the bottom
Where I now flounder about uncertain
Running out of air
Just lost
In wondering
What if?
As the grains of sand
Continue to trickle.
