The Web Poetry Corner - Dwayne Pagnotto - A Joke of Fate
A Joke of Fate
by
Dwayne Pagnotto
What does the clown do?
After the people go home
Tents are closed down
Kids are done laughing
And the fun is over.
Let me tell you.
He goes home and takes off
His happy face
Puts on a sad one.
Stares at his drab fading walls
Paint peeling.
Handles his Souvenirs
Given to him
By admiring strangers.
And he remembers.
Pours himself a single glass of wine
Lights a candle
Places a mirror in front of himself
And studies the image
He sees there.
What does he see?
Let me tell you.
He sees the reflection
Of someone
Who has forgotten
How to be normal.
And he laughs
At himself.
