The Web Poetry Corner - Dwayne Pagnotto - A Day At The Fair

A Day At The Fair

by

Dwayne Pagnotto

All the blind children went to the town square
Disguised as their favorite monster

They ran around scaring the old people.

The other adults pretended not to see
As they bought delectable pastries

And shook in violent fits of silent laughter.

But slowly, unconsciously they were drawn
Into the whirling merrily clad winds of madness

Which spun around them like some insane merry-go-round
To the demonic strains of nursery carnival music.

Eventually the sightless ones took over the fair
And forced the lame orphans to ride the Ferris Wheel of Damnations.

It became visible with each descent of the wheel
That the once innocent visage of the crippled children
Slowly became a grim mask of ancient terror

Brought on by this tender display
Of unripe schoolboy wickedness.

As the fair ended and the crowd broke up
The invalids retreated
Into the wild fluffy satin pillow of nightmares

While the benighted boys retired to the haunted house.
