The Web Poetry Corner - Doug Larson - My Hand

My Hand

by

Doug Larson

I am writing this with my hand
I hope you understand
We were walking in the field
green grass and dandelions
my friend Mikal and I
on our way home from school
The sun was hot on our faces
We were laughing
Mikal pushed me jokingly
and jumped out front
big toothy grin
eyes laughing, all scrunched up
then there was a pop
pressure
like I was pushed hard underwater
then silence and mist
everything rose colored
I was staring
at green grass spotted
with crimson dewdrops
and the echo of a scream
in my head
then I was here.
-
This bed is too big
there is way too much of it
and not enough of me
I keep asking
but they still won’t bring me a mirror
They say I’m lucky
luckier than Mikal
I don’t know
I miss his laughing eyes
and I still dream his face
grinning in the hot sun
then disappearing
in a red cloud
I hope you can read this
I am writing it with my hand
I hope you understand
