The Web Poetry Corner - Diane Klammer - Rain

Rain

by

Diane Klammer

Let the afternoon haze fade into storm clouds
As it erases shadows of children dancing
On concrete palates
While the surrounding air above
Grows chilly and dark

Let the cadence hit the skylight above the stairs
Changing visual to auditory delight
While the world outside is scrubbed clean
Let the rain pour down

Let windows glisten in mosaic glass patterns
Let buckets left outside fill up’
Next to thirsty growing grass
Let cars crawl cautiously through shiny slippery streets

Let umbrellas decorate heads of hurrying strangers
Families huddle close squealing with delight getting wet
Slickers and boots mistily appear
Let the rain pour down

Let the city breathe and the country rejuvenate
Wash away the drought with this rhythmic music
Flow into storm drains and make street puddles to splash in

Accept this renewing baptism
Dance with joyful reverence for each drop of life
The land will exalt in its aftermath,
So let the rain pour down.
