Nature Run
by
Diane Klammer
A path stretches out
Inviting me to run
Cushioning my feet
The woods and I
So the two of us meander
By whispering wind and water
The moon slices the sky
As my feet and breath
Sing a strange song
From some primeval place
I stir within
Answering its ancient call
The trail mysteriously reveals
Its course of uphill stump and rock
Grass dirt and stream
I tread its way
Foreign yet known
I bring my own delights
Carry my own sorrows
I go I go I go
Accepting all that is offered
With awe and inspiration
I revel in beauty
In small stumbles
In grace and swiftness
From some inborn clarity
Knowing the only way
Is through dark and switchbacks
Campfires and others passing by
Uncertainty does not hold me back
Does not prevent my legs
From carrying me through
As I glanceahead
A deer bisects the trail
Cheers me in my soreness
Distracts me as I push on
My head bends slightly down
Upper body relaxes
I kick forward
Heel ball toe heel ball toe
At times I fly
At times I seem to slow to a crawl
But I steal moments
When I wink at the moon
Become one with the evening
Forget all but the motion
Existing in just this one space
