The Web Poetry Corner - Diane Klammer - Land of Opportunity

Land of Opportunity

by

Diane Klammer

Abundant as a landscape
They multiply like rain
Lay asleep on concrete
Eyes look away again

Weathered with discouragement
Some too fatigued to care
Families shiver closer in
Their children's vacant stares

Proud dwellings are constructed
Out of boxes and old cars
Another night of piercing cold
Is drowned in liquor jars

Some sell their blood for money
Walk barefoot through the snow
Steal food from trash cans hungrily
Help for them is slow

A ruthless random villain
Called poverty does reign
Removing homes from millions
Who will end their pain

The problem is bipartisan
We spend money on defense
Loathe to confront the looming bill
To pay all of these rents

We can read it in the newspapers
Hope that it will end
If things get really tough for us
We can always sleep on them

NEXT?
Why don't you look at To me they are just strangers
