The Web Poetry Corner - Diane Klammer - Cupid

Cupid

by

Diane Klammer

This guy has wings
Of some secret stuff
He’s no angel
Though I thought so in the buff

He hides these wings
Beneath my skirt
He takes them out
When he gets hurt

I turned my gaze
During a fight
With wind wounded gauze
He took flight

With his shields of cotton
His gossamer mud
After words as sharp as eagles claws
His wings were white as blood

Then he disappeared
Ran out of words
He should have socked me in the jaw
It would have been less absurd

As I was recovering
From this crazy lovers blaze
He flew back in
Through the word stained haze

He landed right in front of me
Knocked me quite off track
He had a message in his teeth
It said "I want you back".

He put his wings away
He had the nerve to smile
It became a rainy day
I should have run a stormy mile

But Cupid shoots those arrows
Right straight through the heart
So to the message I said "yes".
Oh, why can’t I be smart?
But hell can’t fight these forces
Stronger than intellect
My soul betrayed all caution
I squashed him to my chest

Those damn wings used for cover
Still get in the way
But now I am aware of them
And the games he likes to play
