Conformity
by
Diane Klammer
I implore...and they jeer at me.
Inane. Foolish. Naive.
Mocking stares build a playpen
while their wooden laughter cages me
Into childlike anonymity.
I inform...and they point at me.
Different. Conspiring. Dangerous.
Piercing glares build a jailer's den
while their iron accusations bar me
Into sullen hostility.
So, in frustrated confusion
I surrender to conformity,
abducted by Apathy's welcoming arms
and carried amidst the silent majority.
