A Sleepless Night
by
Diane Klammer
(sonnet)
A lullaby of sleep is hard to reach.
I pull my wrinkled quilt above my head.
Although insomnia’s reasons I can teach.
This night is spent awake inside my bed.
Strange noises from the outside bother me
The sounds become like hammers and they say
"Go leave this dream you cannot stay to see"
"Wake up before the rooster crows its day."
I weave myself into a tangled ball.
My silent nerves are screaming for some rest.
With wrathful thoughts I curse to conquer all.
When can I learn to figure out this quest?
Yet early hours long before the dawn
