The Web Poetry Corner - Clarius Ugwuoha - African Mother
African Mother
by
Clarius Ugwuoha
Mother,
Aged,
Grey suds on
Her hair
Tall
unbowed
untouched
By the burden
Of child birth!
Mother straps
The child
to her back
Loads on her head
Cooks and
Fetches
From the ponds
with practised ease
mother's strength
Sounds on the mortar
behind the house at dusk
And she sleeps
With her eyes awake
Mother has
Come out today!
From the back of the house
To the front.
mother has come out today
As father has always done!
