The Hunters Heart

by

Alan C. Keimig

This is a hunter's heart. The sorrow
Of a kill. The wild grace gone, laid
Lifeless in this from. The soul of
Each departed equally. The spirit
Of one released to be among
The brethren. The other broken in
The body until hallowed by the light
It is lifted to the wind by necessity
Paid homage to this settled sorrow
In full formal ceremony prayed
To four directions, raised to the sun,
To the shadow world, to sky and
Earth, to sea and sky again. Then
Behold the eye flickers with a tear
Of blessing. Tear of thanks and
Thanksgiving holy to all things, behold
This is your brother's gift. Give honor to
This time and day and place forever
In your heart and mind. Hold him sacred
In this benefit and praise always.
