Intrusion
by
Alan C. Keimig
The virgin quiet of this forest
Is broken by our steps, for years
Nature's earned atmosphere cleverly
Concealed this space from us. Now
We break into its sanctuary
Self-assertion conqueror we call
It but sanity must be revered.
Our presence wounds the air, suffocates
The stillness pushes out the zero
Waiting, disturbs the cloistered eons.
A snap, a snarl, a hiss, the blue sky
Boils to gray as soot coils into sparks
Released in lightning swiftness ascends
And strikes. The thunder rolls its
Warning. Retraced tracks move back
Away, trees close the sheltered path
Protects the way discovery goes unmemorized.
