Following up on the great fourth entry in the series, this one hits near rock bottom. The crew tries to have fun, but the story ends up being less humorous and more dreadfully serious as the film reaches it's end. In this one, Spock's half-brother (Laurence Luckinbill) takes over the Enterprise in an attempt to reach a distant planet, that supposedly holds a powerful god as well as the meaning of the universe.

There are moments, such as the teaching of Spock to sing "Row, row, row your boat", but those are incredibly to far and few in between to keep your interest held for two hours. The actors really show their ages here, especially the whale, James "Scotty" Doohan. In a way, I'm glad they retired the old crew for good. They were running out of good adventures and characters. At least the last one with the original crew was a better one than this weak entry.

My Rating = Two Stars
