Residents discover a strange mist that hangs over their homes, killing anyone who stays outside for too long. A group of survivors are trapped in a grocery store and must stand against the deadly fog. The original story written by Stephen King is simply stunning. The story foreshadows many things such as showing how humans are savages and will do anything to survive. The script is fantastic and the dialogue fits wonderfully and never sounds out of place.
Within the course of the film, all the performances are great. The two actors that stand out are Thomas Jane and Marcia Gay Harden. Thomas Jane brings a realistic and human element to the film, being almost the last surviving human who hasn't gone insane. Marcia Gay Harden gives a performance that deserves much more recognition. She captures her character and the emotion very well. Marcia will make the audience hate her character, but she should be brought up more for her superb acting.
Throughout the film, quite a few elements of CGI are added. In this movie, the effects are amazing. The film is hazy and is, of course, misty throughout. Most of the colors are faded and this is truly effective. The look and feel of the film works and gives it an overall very nice atmosphere.
The concept of The Mist doesn't sound all that great, but it's something that just has to be seen. The ending is incredibly depressing and saddening and many people may not like it. Otherwise, this film is entertaining, exciting, suspenseful, well-written, and has outstanding performances. The Mist is definitely worth checking out whether or not you're a Stephen King fan.
