Elizabeth Halsey is a scheming and coarse-tongued middle school teacher who gets dumped by her wealthy boyfriend and rebounds by sinking her claws into a handsome substitute teacher. There's just one problem, he's already dating Amy Squirrel, the most revered teacher on campus. She is not at all eager to hand over her new man, who is slated to inherit his family's fortune. The trailer and title led me to believe that the film focuses on Haley's job as a teacher. However, this isn't the case. Instead of focusing on the classroom, the film centers around Halsey's life and attempting to find a new wealthy man to live off . The movie could have achieved much more through an increased amount of humor around the teaching job in the classroom. It's hard to root for such a selfish and cruel character, but she still delivers some laughs. This is one of those movies where audiences will be chuckling more than they will be laughing. A lot could have been done with this concept, but the script is ultimately underwhelming.
Three of the actors in particular have become big figures in the film industry. Cameron Diaz performs as Elizabeth Halsey. I enjoy seeing her mean side through this character and conveys the few laughs there are in the movie. Justin Timberlake plays the new substitute teacher that she crushes on. He fits the character, but there isn't anything special to note. Jason Segel is the gym teacher at the school. He deserved a bigger role in the film. However, he dominated the scenes he appeared in. Don't expect any fantastic acting skills to be shown here, but each actor is suitable in his or her character.
At the end of the day, Bad Teacher is forgettable. There are comedies a lot worse, but this isn't a film I recommend adding to your collection. The jokes seem to be far apart, but not many of them are very satisfying. Even though the movie already appeared to be poor from the trailer, I held some hope that it would surprise me. I know that I haven't really said anything positive about the movie, but there are a few jokes that are worthwhile. It's just a shame there aren't very many of them. Bad Teacher should be rented by those who are curious and avoided by the rest.
