If you want to know the details, read the book. However...as a friend used to like to pompusly posit..."it is apparent to the casual observer"...that the U.S. is steadfastly heading down this path. Polls reflect that even the most apolitical among us are aware that this is true. About 75% of the population believes that we are on the wrong course. This means that about half of those who do not...ever...vote, see the handwriting on the wall. So, why don't they vote?
The answer can be summed up in two words. Tweedledee...or...Tweedledum?
No matter who the loyal voters elect next time...barring a miracle...the winners will continue pretty much along the same course as the Bushites. We will not get universal health care. Global warming will continue unabated. Wars will continue. The dollar will continue to decline. As far as truthfulness and democracy are concerned...GET REAL! All you have to do is listen to the candidates...any one will do...to see that there is little chance of either of these improving any time soon. Like the Roman Empire, our leaders are terminally decadent. Unlike Rome, we will not take a few hundred years to dissolve. It will happen MUCH faster.
Worst of all, things are not quite bad enough yet to spur the People...the only force really strong enough to change things...into action. As long as there is food on the table, gas in the tank and a roof over our heads, very few of us will take to the streets and demand the overthrow of the current political system.
So, are we doomed? Will the United States fall apart in much the same was as the Roman Empire, the British Empire and, more recently, the Soviet Empire?
Here there is a three word answer...but not quite as simple as the other. Yes...and...No...and...Maybe?
Yes we are going to steadily decline, gradually losing influence and power all over the world. Our "territorial integrity" MAY be preserved...with emphasis on the word MAY...since we really don't have any colonies to lose, but there is always that chance of dissolution...a fracturing of the union....with states either going it alone...like Claifornia or Texas...or joining with Canada or Mexico.
No, we are probably not going to starve or have our ecomony come to a halt. After all, Russia, Britain and Italy still exist and aren't THAT bad places to live. They each have dimished expectations from the "good old days," but one can still hoist a pint in the local pub, swill some wine or down a glass of vodka to ease the pain of day-to-day life.
So MAYBE all is not lost, right?
Food, energy and shelter are probably going to continue. But what about constant warfare? What about collapsing economies? What about global warming? These are problems that CAN NOT BE SOLVED by a single country or even a large group of countries. They will require every one in the entire world cooperating at the same time and on more-or-less the same course. As long as nation states compete with bullshit and guns, rather than truth and peace, there is no chance of change.
So what's the answer? It should be "apparent to the casual observer" that what is necessary is World Revolution...World DEMOCRATIC revolution. Who will this benefit? In the short run, the majority of the poor and oppressed. In the long run...just a few years or decades at the pace of modern history...it will benefit EVERYONE.
And how can this be accomplished? Right here in River City...brothers and sisters...on the World Wide Web. It is just a matter of time before machine translation solves the "Tower of Babel" problem and allows us to communicate...in real time...with everyone else in the world. Sites like Facebook and MySpace have begun to solve the "group formation" problem as well, albeit in a rather cheesy fashion. How long will it be before someone...somewhere...calls for a general uprising and people actually respond in an organized fashion?
To those wags who suggest that worldwide capitalism will solve all this with the "free markets" that are springing up everywhere, we say, GET REAL! Karl Marx may have been a shitty revolutionary...he forgot about that "consent of the governed" thing...but he surely was a good analyst. He long ago identified capitalism as the ultimate pyramid scam which, like all pyramid hoaxes, must eventually come crashing down. Doesn't look to us like it will take long at all.
When it does, who should decide what to do next? We think "everyone in the world" is a good answer to THAT question. What do you think?
Talk to you later...
